Blond Jenny is a painter, photographer and performance artist based in New York City. Her artworks portrays the story of the two sides of her life between South Korea and the United States.

Her artwork is the manifestation of her desires, emotions and wishes. When she moved to New York from Seoul, she grew nostalgic for her life in Korea. When she first bonded with her neighbors, she used that opportunity to create art about her new life, friends, and family. Her work continues to express the duality of her existence in America with influence from Korea or other happy places she dreams up in her mind all centered around her character Blond Jenny.

She has shown at the Photography Department of the Padova Art Fair, Clio Art Fair, Spectrum Miami Art Show, and Nabi Museum of the Arts. Her work has also been selected for the following shows: Hipster & Otaku Photography Exhibition CICA Museum; Trending: Contemporary Art Now; Target Gallery for the Women’s Caucus for Art exhibition; Me, My Selfie and I Exhibition Hudson Guild Gallery; Duality of Feminine and Feminist Exhibition; Gallery 66; NCWCA-sponsored “F*ck U! In the Most Loving Way” Exhibition, Arc Gallery; and digital display Dreamers Collection Exposure Award, Louvre Museum, Paris France.

Artist Statement

As a child growing up in Seoul, Korea, my parents didn’t let me play with dolls. I was in love with the doll like blonde hair Japanese characters I saw on TV but never had the plastic toys that all my schoolmates had. So, I drew my own characters then made cut outs of my drawings to play with in place of the dolls I couldn’t have. My favorite character was Jenny, a blonde haired cartoon with big eyes. Eventually I made a mask and was able to become my own life sized doll, Blond Jenny. I used her as a way to escape my fears and tell my stories.

Moving to New York in 2012 was the biggest decision of my life and I quickly became nostalgic for Korea. Since then my artwork is a dichotomy between my memories of Korea and my new life in America. I’ve been using both photography and painting to convey imagery that consists of true and false, reality and fiction.

My recent work is focused on nature, women’s rights, and American politics. I’m using video and self photography with mix media to expand the range of expression in my photography.
